SF Giants snap losing streak behind Webb’s strong start, Gilbert’s first homer

SF Giants snap losing streak behind Webb’s strong start, Gilbert’s first homer

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants could’ve settled for two runs. Willy Adames was not in the business of settling.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Dominic Smith muscled a broken-bat single to left field. Heliot Ramos, celebrating his bobblehead day, scored easily. Rafael Devers followed behind Ramos and crossed home plate. It would’ve been fair to assume that Adames would stop at third. Then, he spotted his window.

Right fielder Jake Mangum overshot his cutoff man and threw to second base. Adames, recognizing the opportunity, bolted to the plate. Shortstop Ha-Seong Kim double-clutched his throw, and that sliver of time allowed Adames to narrowly score.

There was no shortage of reasons for Sunday afternoon crowd to sheer as the Giants snapped their seven-game losing streak with a 7-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. Logan Webb pitched seven shutout frames. Drew Gilbert hit his first career homer among other milestones. Tyler Fitzgerald immediately followed with one of his own. Jung Hoo Lee made an improbable catch.

The Giants have consistently drawn great crowds even amid their worst home stretch since moving to San Francisco. They haven’t had much worth cheering in recent weeks. But Adames’ mad dash home was a true moment, setting off a crowd pop at Oracle Park that hasn’t been heard in quite some time.

Miller faces setback in rehab

Left-hander Erik Miller felt discomfort in his left elbow following his rehab appearance with Triple-A Sacramento on Friday and will receive an MRI, per manage Bob Melvin.

Miller hasn’t appeared in a game for the Giants since July 2 due to a left elbow sprain but had been trending towards re-joining the team as they began their four-game set against the Padres in San Diego on Monday.
