WALNUT CREEK — An Italian restaurant with a legendary name has been temporarily closed, just days after opening its downtown location in a prime shopping destination area.
Original Joe’s did not suffer major damage from an overnight kitchen fire early Monday, fire officials said. But the aftermath of fixing any damage that was done forced the restaurant to be closed Monday.

The interruption may last the week, but it may be shorter, too, according to a store employee who greeted visitors outside the restaurant.
Contra Costa Fire Protection District crews got the call about the small fire at 12:08 a.m. They put out the flames almost immediately, officials said. Investigators indicated the fire was accidental and that the crew still was on-duty. A full report can take several days to complete.
A back interior wall in the restaurant had some smoke damage, officials said. The damage from the fire was undetectable from outside the restaurant.
The restaurant has its roots in San Francisco, dating back to 1937. The restaurant in the 1300 block of South Main Street is its newest location and is a prime corner in its premier Broadway Plaza shopping center.
They opened their doors last Thursday at 11 a.m. Patrons lined up around the block for the grand opening.
