California Border Patrol agent facing felony assault charges has died

A U.S. Border Patrol agent who was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a Long Beach police officer while off duty in July has died, officials said.

Isaiah Hodgson, 29, was confirmed to have died by Natlain Daldalian, spokesman for the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office, on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

Deputies were dispatched around 12:45 p.m. on Aug. 22 to a home on Avocet Circle in Valle Vista, an unincorporated community east of Hemet, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. They found Hodgson unresponsive and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Deputies did not find evidence indicating foul play, the department said. Information on his cause of death was not immediately available.

On July 11, Hodgson had pleaded not guilty to three felony counts of resisting an executive officer, one felony count of battery with injury on a peace officer, and three misdemeanor counts related to carrying a loaded firearm in public, prosecutors said. If convicted, he faced up to seven years in state prison.

Authorities alleged Hodgson was intoxicated and armed with a handgun at a Shoreline Village restaurant on July 7. He entered the women’s restroom and approached a female patron, who saw the weapon and alerted staff, prosecutors said. A security guard then saw a firearm in his waistband and asked him to leave.

When Long Beach police officers arrived, Hodgson refused commands and fought with them, injuring one officer, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Hodgson was released following his initial court appearance and ordered to surrender firearms, stay in California, and attend weekly alcohol counseling sessions. His next court appearance was scheduled for Sept. 24.

The Department of Homeland Security previously said Hodgson’s employment status was under investigation. It was not immediately clear Tuesday whether he remained employed by the agency at the time of his death.
