Rookie guard returns to Valkyries as sharpshooter Zandalasini remains out

The Valkyries brought Bree Hall back on a seven-day contract Wednesday as they continue to deal with injury issues down the stretch of their inaugural season.

Forward Cecilia Zandalasini was ruled out for Saturday’s home game against Washington (5:30 p.m., KPIX+) with a calf injury that has already kept her out of Golden State’s last two games.

Before the injury, the 29-year-old Italian had been on a productive run for the Valkyries, scoring in double digits in each of her last five games as she shot a scorching 17-of-31 (55%) from 3-point range. She has been a key scorer for the Valkyries since All-Star Kayla Thornton went down with a season-ending knee injury.

Saturday’s game begins a back-to-back set that finishes Sunday at home against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever.

Hall previously played on a seven-day hardship contract for the Valkyries while several of Golden State’s players were away participating in EuroBasket. She signed on June 18 and played eight minutes over two games for the Valkyries, scoring three points in a blowout win over Connecticut. Hall, 22, was drafted by the Fever out of South Carolina this spring and later released.

Zandalasini and Thornton aren’t the Valkyries’ only injuries to contend with. Monique Billings has been out since late July with an ankle injury and guards Tiffany Hayes and Carla Leite were both injured in last Friday’s loss to Phoenix, missing Sunday’s win over Dallas.
