After Trump announcement, Intel among several companies to make Bay Area job cuts

Just days after President Donald Trump announced the U.S. government had secured a 10% stake in Intel, the Santa Clara-based company revealed that it was cutting nearly 200 jobs in California, according to WARN letters filed on Aug. 25 with the state Employment Development Department.

Intel is cutting 98 jobs in Santa Clara and 83 jobs in Folsom. The cuts were originally scheduled to occur within a 14-day period centered on July 15.

The company indicated that some employees might receive, or might have received, nine weeks of pay “in lieu of further notice” regarding job losses, Intel stated in its WARN letter.

Including the most recent cuts, Intel has now disclosed plans to slash 2,461 jobs in the Bay Area in recent years, according to this news organization’s review of the WARN letters that Intel has filed starting in 2023.

The Intel staffing reductions in the Bay Area consist of 927 layoffs in 2023, 700 in 2024, and 834 so far in 2025, the review of the WARN notices shows.

Alameda-based biotech firm Exelixis and San Leandro-based logistics provider Web to Door also were among the most recent companies to file layoff notices with the state Employment Development Department.

Web to Door has decided to eliminate 192 jobs. Of these, 67 are in Richmond, 63 in Milpitas, and 62 in Oakland. The company said it would cease operations at facilities in all three cities once the layoffs are completed.

Exelixis is laying off 71 workers in Alameda at the company’s corporate headquarters.

Web to Door and Exelixis both stated their layoffs would take effect around Oct. 27.
