LOS ALTOS HILLS — Traffic is snarled on Interstate 280 as crews continue to mop up a chemical spill from a crash Thursday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 12:45 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the highway near Magdalena Avenue, the CHP said. No injuries were reported.

All southbound lanes were initially blocked. Around 3:20 p.m., the CHP announced the No. 4 lane was open. The Magdalena off-ramp is also serving as an alternate route.

The spill also impacted traffic in the northbound direction. Two lanes were open as of 3:40 p.m., according to the Santa Clara County Fire Department, which was cleaning up the spill.

Sodium hypochlorite, or bleach, and hydrochloric acid, or muriatic acid, spilled in the crash, the fire department said. When combined, the chemicals produce chlorine gas.

“Several monitors are deployed to ensure the safety of passing motorists,” the fire department said in a social media post.

A CHP spokesperson said there is no estimated time to reopen the rest of the lanes.
