According to a social media post from the city of Watsonville, two adults were injured and taken to the hospital after the RC airplane struck them. One of the victims sustained moderate injuries and the other sustained serious injuries that were not considered life threatening. The remote-controlled aircraft also caused damage to the exterior of the residence.

The Watsonville Police Department, Watsonville Fire Department, airport personnel, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol responded to assist with the incident.

“The City’s top priority is the safety and well-being of our community,” the social media post from the city of Watsonville stated. “Any further details regarding the incident will come from the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, the lead agency investigating this incident.”

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office posted on social media that deputies are investigating the incident.

The Fire in the Sky event is an open house for the Watsonville Municipal Airport. It gives attendees a chance to explore first responder aircraft, agri-business flight departments, and vintage planes up close. It features flyovers, a patriotic parachute flag jump, live music, a free Kids Zone, local food vendors, and a fireworks show to end the night.

The free event started in 2017 and marks the start of the Labor Day celebrations in Watsonville.
