The blaze broke out around 3:20 p.m. at the two-story complex, located in the 800 block of Deland Avenue in the city’s Willow Glen neighborhood, according to the San Jose Fire Department. It took crews roughly an hour to place the fire under control.

Crews rescued one occupant, who was assessed but not taken to the hospital, fire officials said.

All 10 units were impacted, but just six were occupied, fire officials said. A dozen adults, one child, four cats and one bird were displaced. The Red Cross is assisting the residents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
