What was the song of the summer? Not ‘Ordinary,’ according to the VMAs

Women dominated the spotlight at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, with multiple wins for Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga and Sabrina Carpenter.

If either Taylor Swift or Beyoncé had won artist of the year, it would have broken their tie of 30 VMA wins each. Lady Gaga’s win leaves them sharing the top spot on the historical list.

Alex Warren grabbed new-artist honors, but his ballad “Ordinary” — which Billboard has declared the song of the summer — lost in that category to Tate McRae’s “Just Keep Watching,” the much more lively theme to the movie “F1.”

“Ordinary” was a remarkably somber summer chart topper — the title generally goes to a high-energy banger (“I Had Some Help,” “Despacito,” “Old Town Road,” “Call Me Maybe,” et al.). It withstood the challenge of three Morgan Wallen entries to claim Billboard’s summer title, but at the end of August was bumped from the top of the Hot 100 by “Golden,” from “KPop Demon Hunters.”

Following are the VMA nominees, with the winner in bold.
