Alameda gets the beer garden’s it’s long wanted with Park Station

Alameda gets the beer garden’s it’s long wanted with Park Station

The sprawling, boisterous beer garden that Alameda’s east end has long craved is finally here. Park Station is now open on the island a few blocks from the beach, serving suds, live music and kind-of-naughty comfort food.

The beer garden debuted in August at 1200 Park St., Alameda, in a 4,000-plus square-foot space that formerly housed a tire shop. Colorful murals adorn the interior, with communal tables and high ceilings, and the outdoors has beer-keg tables and heat lamps and lots of room for patrons — and their dogs — to roam.

Park Station fills a stein-sized hole in an island that’s otherwise known for open-air beer haunts. There’s Speisekammer with its Germanic offerings to the north, and then to the west on the old Naval Air Station is Almanac Adventureland & Brewery, The Rake at Admiral Maltings and Humble Sea Brewing.

“The owners consist of a group of commercial real-estate collectives who met over the many years in the industry,” says Melody Thebeau, who co-owns the place along with Dan Thebeau and others. “We all share a common bond in this adventure, which is to build community. We take pride in presenting the best selections of beer in the West region, along with amazing wine offerings.”

The beer menu has more than 30 taps and on any given day visitors might enjoy pours from Oakland’s Ghost Town Brewing (Necrocat Pale Ale), Alameda Brewing (Big Paddle pilsner), Denver’s Crooked Stave Brewing (Sour Rose wild ale) and Portland’s Von Ebert Brewing (imperial IPA). There are gluten-free rice lagers and fruity hard seltzers, and nonalcoholic offerings from Berkeley’s Fieldwork Brewing.

“This menu is rotating, with an emphasis on fresh, local beer in a variety of styles for all palates,” says the beer garden’s Lucas Anderson.

Meanwhile, the food at Park Station comes from Oakland’s Southie, which serves daily specials like ceviche, grilled cheeses and truffle-bacon-and-egg salad. Dishes that lean more “South” include a Spicy Hog pulled-pork sandwich with jalapeno and lime aioli ($15) and Fried Popcorn Chicken with paprika salt ($9).

Details: Open 3-9 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, noon-10:30 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-9 Sunday at 1200 Park St., Alameda; parkstation.beer
