Avril Lavigne debuts Pinot Noir with Banshee Wines: Is it worth the hype?

A millennial pop-punk icon known for her trademark smoky eyes and head-bopping anthems is making her debut on the wine stage.

Avril Lavigne, the eight-time Grammy-nominated songstress of the early aughts, has partnered with Geyserville’s Banshee Wines to produce a limited-release Pinot Noir from Alexander Valley.

(Incidentally, Lavigne – or “la vigne” in French – means “vine” or “vineyard,” a detail my high school French teacher would be delighted to know I noticed on my own.)

Lavigne, who has sold 50 million albums worldwide, broke onto the music scene in 2002 with the hit single “Complicated.” The song catapulted the Canadian-born singer into the mainstream and has since been certified three times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Named in honor of the smash hit, “Complicated,” the wine is being released following Lavigne’s successful North American Greatest Hits Tour, where Banshee was the official wine sponsor.

“I rocked out with Banshee Wines backstage every night,” said Lavigne. “So teaming up with the brand to produce my own wine just felt right.”

“Complicated” enters a competitive market, joining the ranks of other celebrity wines as many brands face challenging conditions and shifting consumer trends. The limited-release Pinot Noir will have to contend with the growing number of celebrity offerings, including the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle’s As Ever Rosé, actress Jessica Biel’s Prophet and Poet, singer Kylie Minogue’s French Rosé, John Legend’s LVE Collection and the ever-popular 19 Crimes from Snoop Dogg.

But Banshee Wines, which was purchased by Bill Foley in 2018, isn’t worried. The label remains one of the fastest-growing wine brands in the U.S. (Circana Total U.S. Food: 52 weeks ending July 13, 2025) and has won the Impact Hot Prospect award for five consecutive years.

“The Complicated collaboration fuses Avril’s unmistakable artistry and rock ’n’ roll spirit with our winemaking craft,” said Jason Daniel, chief marketing officer for Foley Family Wines & Spirits. “It (gives) fans a new way to connect with her music.”

In honor of Lavigne, Banshee has pledged to donate $10,000 to benefit She Is The Music, a songwriting camp dedicated to creating more opportunities for women in the music industry.

Complicated ($30), a “light, velvety” Pinot Noir that offers “bright notes of cherry and raspberry,” will be available through the Banshee website and tasting room while supplies last. A limited number (50) of “Sip and Spin” kits will also be available for purchase and include a record player and vinyl copy of Lavigne’s 2002 “Let Go” album.

“I hope everyone can crack open a bottle (of Complicated) with their best friends and blast the music that started it all for me,” said Lavigne. “Life can be complicated, but a good glass of wine doesn’t have to be.”
