Kirk Humbles III’s three-touchdown showcase powers Alameda past Mt. Diablo

Kirk Humbles III’s three-touchdown showcase powers Alameda past Mt. Diablo

CONCORD — Kirk Humbles III only needed to touch the ball three times to make his mark in Alameda’s blowout win over Mt. Diablo.

The senior scored in all different ways on Friday night. Humbles rushed for a score, caught a touchdown pass and returned a long pick-six to lead Alameda to a 45-21 win over Mt. Diablo on the road.

“As soon as I get the ball, you already know what time it is,” Humbles said. “The goal is to get five to 10 yards every time I touch the ball, but a touchdown is always nice.”

Humbles finished 203 yards from scrimmage.

The Hornets came into Friday with a little more edge as they were motivated to avenge last year’s loss to Mt. Diablo.

Alameda coach Robin Morris said the extra motivation helped his team get its fourth straight win.

“We knew they were a good team and they beat us by a touchdown last year,” Morris said. “These kids came back fighting and fighting and fighting. I’m just super proud of them.”

Mt. Diablo played their first home game of the season after its field was vandalized a few weeks ago. Despite the pressure of playing in front of its home crowd and getting adjusted to the new turf, Mt. Diablo coach Fetuao Mua didn’t give his team a pass for its poor play.

“There were definitely a lot of emotions going into it, but at the end of the day there are no excuses,” Mua said. “Alameda showed up to play football and we didn’t.”

Alameda didn’t get off to a great start as Mt. Diablo found the end zone first after Antonio Campbell III recovered a fumble and lateraled to Kaile Leffel, who ran back a 70-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

But all it took for the Hornets to get going was a few electric plays from Humbles.

Alameda captured its first lead of the game when Humbles took a flip pass from quarterback Casey Koga-Dean and juked out multiple defenders en route to an 87-yard touchdown.

On the ensuing possession, Mt. Diablo faced a third-and-long in Alameda territory. Humbles picked off a pass near the right sideline and raced up the field to return an 81-yard pick six.

“I was just thinking about not trying to get caught,” Humbles said when asked what he thought about his two first-half touchdowns. “I’m not trying to be slow. I’m just thinking about taking it to the crib.”

A 52-yard touchdown pass from Koga-Dean to Austin Soper near the end of the first half all but took the wind out of Mt. Diablo’s sails.

Alameda’s lead was never threatened in the second half, and Humbles capped off the victory with one more long score, this time from 35 yards out to give Alameda a commanding 24-point lead in the fourth quarter.

The Hornets’ defense was equally impressive as it held Mt. Diablo’s offense to 52 passing yards in the first half while forcing four turnovers. Alameda has held its opponent to just under 12 points per game through the first four games of the year.

“When it comes to defense, it’s just about knowing your responsibility and the basic fundamentals,” Morris said.

Alameda is off to its best start since 2023 and will be vying for its second consecutive West Alameda County Conference Shoreline Division title this season.

Outside of his first two seasons as coach in 2020 and 2021, Morris has yet to register a losing season with the Hornets.
