Bay FC scores first, but falls 2-1 at Portland Thorns FC

PORTLAND, Ore. — Olivia Mountrie scored twice to lead the Portland Thorns to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory that officially ended  Bay FC’s  slim playoff hopes.

Saturday night’s win boosts the playoff credentials of the Thorns (9-7-7), who move up to fourth in the standings and are now level on points with third-place Gotham FC.

Bay FC’s winless streak stretched to 12 games as it remained in 13th place in the 14-team NWSL.

Bay FC (4-12-7) scored first on Taylor Huff’s goal from the edge of the box in the 36th minute.

The outstretched glove of Thorns goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold prevented Alyssa Malonson from giving Bay FC a 2-0 lead from 11 yards out in the 39th.

Moultrie got the Thorns level in the 51st with a low shot past Bay goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz.

The 20-year-old Thorns midfielder then deftly curled a direct free-kick around the Bay wall and just inside the post to make it 2-1 in the 69th. It was her first career two-goal game.

Bay FC coach Albertin Montoya to step down at end of season, club announces

“I thought we played some really good football out there and I told the team, you played well enough to win this game,” said Bay FC coach Albertin Montoya. “We came into a hostile environment, a packed stadium which is difficult to play in here in Portland, but we came out in that first half fired up and played so well, and throughout the entire game we created opportunities.”

The second leg of Bay FC’s Northwest road trip will be next Friday night when it visits Seattle Reign FC.
