It wasn’t always a smooth ride to get there, but the Serra football team remained undefeated in West Catholic Athletic League play, dispatching St. Francis 41-28 on Saturday afternoon in San Mateo.
The Padres, ranked No. 5 in the Bay Area News Group Top 25, improved to 4-3 overall and 4-0 in the WCAL, tied with No. 2 Archbishop Riordan for the best record in the league. If current trends hold, the two could be on a collision course for the league title when they meet at Serra in the final week of the regular season.
After committing four turnovers in the first half, Serra led 17-14 at halftime but quickly lost that lead when Sean Walsh caught a 54-yard touchdown pass from Drew Cumby.
But the Lancers’ lead wouldn’t last long, either. Jayden Aparicio returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, and the Padres never trailed again.
St. Francis, ranked No. 10 in the BANG rankings, dropped to 2-5, with both wins (2-2) coming in WCAL play.
Serra will travel to Los Altos Hills to take on Archbishop Mitty next week at Foothill College. St. Francis will host St. Ignatius in a rematch of last season’s Central Coast Section Open Division championship game.
