Fans of Hershey Felder needn’t have worried that his “Rachmaninoff and the Tsar” show earlier this year — billed as the finale in his composer series — would be his last performances in the Bay Area.
TheatreWorks Silicon Valley announced Monday that the pianist-historian-playwright will return to kick off 2026 with a world premiere, “Hershey Felder: The Piano and Me,” featuring music by Wagner, Mendelssohn and others.
The autobiographical show will make its debut Jan. 17 and run through Feb. 8 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts.
Felder’s acclaimed portrayals of noted composers have broken attendance records for the Peninsula theater company, Over the years, he has presented shows that artfully combine the life stories and music of such masters as Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, Berlin and Gershwin.
Felder has been producing his unique form of theatrical wizardry since his 1998 premiere of “George Gershwin Alone,” according to a January 2025 interview with David John Chavez for the Bay Area News Group.
In that interview, Felder explained the genesis of his productions: “What I’ve been looking to do with these characters is to illuminate the context of what people do not know,” he said. “Even if you talk to musicians and pianists, they know a lot about the rhetoric, how to play something, and what is the accepted style, but in general, they don’t tend to study historical context.
“What I’m looking for, really, is to set these guys in context, so that when we hear the music, we understand where this music came from.”
