Here are this week’s top matchups:
Thursday
Live Oak (6-1, 1-1) at Branham (5-2, 1-1), 7:15 p.m.: Both teams bounced back last week after opening BVAL Mt. Hamilton Division play with losses. Live Oak beat Lincoln-San Jose 17-13 and Branham defeated Christopher 26-14. In Live Oak’s win, Gage Jones carried a whopping 38 times for 195 yards and Adrian Leal threw for 142 yards and a touchdown. In Branham’s victory, Michael Murphy ran for 160 yards and a touchdown in 17 carries and Andrew Ho completed 14 of 19 passes for 119 yards and two TDs as the Bruins overcame a 14-13 halftime deficit. Live Oak is 3-2 against Branham since 2006, which includes a 35-21 victory last season. HSRatings.com projects Live Oak to win Thursday, 31-30. – Darren Sabedra
Friday
No. 5 Serra (4-3, 4-0) vs. No. 12 Archbishop Mitty (5-2, 3-1) at Foothill College, 7 p.m.: Mitty, which has put together a strong season to this point, has an opportunity for a true signature win on Friday in Los Altos Hills. The Monarchs will host Serra at their home away from home in West Catholic Athletic League play looking for their first win over the Padres since 2014. The two-headed backfield monster of QB Joseph Engin and RB Lazaro Faraj-Washington will try to make headway against a stout Serra defense headlined by safety Malakai Taufouu and two-way athlete Jeovanni Henley. HSRatings.com projects a 31-14 Serra win. – Christian Babcock
No. 19 Clayton Valley Charter (4-3, 2-0) at No. 11 Campolindo (6-1, 0-1), 7 p.m.: Six years ago, the North Coast Section moved Clayton Valley from the Diablo Athletic League to the East Bay Athletic League for football because it was too dominant. Last year, the Ugly Eagles returned to the DAL and finished tied for first in the Foothill Division with Acalanes. Through two DAL Foothill games this season, CVC had looked a lot like the pre-2019 program that was deemed too strong for the DAL, routing Las Lomas 63-7 and Miramonte 56-14. In the win over Miramonte, Jhadis Luckey, a transfer from California, ran for 255 yards and five touchdowns in 20 carries and caught two passes for 47 yards and a TD. Campolindo opened league play last week with a 45-28 loss at Acalanes. Reid Habas has thrown for 1,271 yards and 12 TDs and Micah Parker has rushed for 491 yards and four TDs to lead Campo, which is 0-5 against CVC since 2016. HSRatings.com picks Campo to win Friday, 31-28. – Darren Sabedra
Prospect (4-3, 4-0) at San Jose (4-3, 3-1), 7:15 p.m.: Prospect has heated up in BVAL West Valley Division play, climbing to sole possession of first place in the eight-team division with three games to go. Last week, Cody Roberts completed 25 of 31 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns in a 24-14 victory over Evergreen Valley. San Jose has also played well in league play, beating Hill, Yerba Buena and James Lick. The Bulldogs’ only league loss was to Independence, a team that Prospect has defeated. During non-league play, San Jose’s Omar Gomez ran for 87 yards and a touchdown in a win over Mills and 157 yards in a loss to Silver Creek. Prospect is 9-2 against San Jose since 2004, including victories in the past four matchups. HSRatings.com projects Prospect to win again, 24-21. – Darren Sabedra
Saturday
No. 6 Los Gatos (4-3, 2-0) at No. 9 Menlo School (7-0, 2-0), 2 p.m.: Is Menlo for real this year? We’ll find out a lot about the Knights on Saturday in Atherton. Menlo has romped through its first two games in the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division, routing Menlo-Atherton 37-7 and Palo Alto 49-6. Los Gatos presents a different test. The Wildcats finally got a long-awaited signature win after several chances, beating Wilcox 35-21 in Santa Clara last week. QB Callum Schweitzer was efficient throwing to numerous receivers, especially Max Thomas, who went for 145 yards. Menlo DE Palmer Riley will try to slow down the Wildcats’ prolific attack, while Jack Freehill is a third-year starter for the Knights at QB. HSRatings.com projects a 41-21 Los Gatos victory. – Christian Babcock
