A woman shopping at a Walmart in Folsom was struck by a teenager riding an e-bike inside the store, police reported.

The collision was reported around 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20. The woman was knocked down, but she declined to press charges, the police report said.

The teenager, who police initially said is a juvenile, was given a trespass warning and released to a parent. An update from the agency said he is 18 years old.

Shoppers who posted on social media that they had seen the aftermath of the collision said the woman was holding an icepack to her head.

The popularity of electric bikes among teens and children has prompted some Northern California agencies to make new rules. Among them:

• Danville banned e-bikes from sidewalks, and Los Altos in June imposed new restrictions on all types of bicycles, including a ban on sidewalk riding.

• In July, Marin County instituted a minimum age of 16 to ride Class 2 e-bikes, which have a throttle.

Under California law, which applies in any area that hasn’t enacted stricter rules, there is no minimum age for Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes, on which the motor assist tops out at 20 mph. Class 3, which tops out at 28 mph, is limited to age 16 and up.

What are California’s rules about kids on electric bikes?
