‘Stranger Things’ finale to hit theaters, Netflix simultaneously

The Upside Down is heading to theaters this New Year’s Eve, giving “Stranger Things” fans the chance to see the Netflix series finale on the big screen.

The hotly anticipated two-hour capstone to the hit sci-fi show’s fifth and final season will land on the streamer globally as it simultaneously hits over 350 select theaters in the U.S. and Canada, beginning on Dec. 31 at 8 p.m. ET and running through New Year’s Day.

Netflix announced the news Thursday as a sort of save-the-date, though the details on specific theaters and how to attend have not yet been released.

Creators Matt and Ross Duffer recently told Variety they hoped for the finale to make it to theaters in tandem with the streaming release, an aspiration reportedly shut down by Netflix honchos until fans grew vocal online.

“Stranger Things” premiered in 2016 and will conclude after multiple hiatuses — a three-year gap between seasons 3 and 4, as well as seasons 4 and 5.

The ’80s-set Emmy winner centers on a group of teens who discover government misdeeds and supernatural entities afoot in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana.

According to the show’s IMDb, the final bow is entitled, “Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up.” The first installment of the two-part season will premiere on Nov. 26, with Volume 2 arriving on Christmas.
