Meta Platforms and Applied Materials disclosed plans to chop well over 600 combined Bay Area jobs, according to WARN letters sent to the state Employment Development Department.

Facebook owner Meta revealed its intentions to cut at least 308 jobs in Menlo Park, according to the WARN notice. Meta had previously warned it was planning new rounds of worldwide layoffs but didn’t specify the locations.

The staffing reductions are slated to occur around Dec. 22, the WARN letter stated. It’s possible some workers may be able to gain jobs elsewhere at Meta.

“Affected employees who are offered and accept another position with the company before their anticipated separation date will not be separated from employment as a result of this action,” Janelle Gale, vice president of people at Meta stated in the WARN letter.

Applied Materials has decided to eliminate 363 jobs in the South Bay, the semiconductor equipment company reported to the EDD. The staffing reductions will affect 262 workers in Santa Clara, 86 in Sunnyvale, and 15 remote workers who report to Santa Clara.

The company said it would conduct its layoffs around Dec. 23.

The two companies both described the layoffs as permanent, noted the workers were not represented by a union, and stated that no affected employees have bumping rights over workers who have less seniority.

The staffing reductions extend what has been a rough 2025 for the Bay Area tech industry, which has been shedding jobs this year.
