Wildlife rehabilitation talk

The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA is giving a presentation about the Wildlife Care Center in Saratoga on Nov. 1.

The care center opened in March. Staff will be presenting about the wildlife programs and facilities they use to treat sick, injured or orphaned animals before releasing them back into the wild.

The presentation is scheduled from 1-2 p.m. in the Maple Room of Saratoga Library.

Excellent community college

West Valley College was named one of the 200 community colleges in the country eligible to apply for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence.

The Aspen Institute is a global nonprofit that was founded in 1949 to prioritize human improvement. Its College Excellence Program aims to strengthen higher education institutions and its leaders to improve student outcomes. The prize for the award is $1 million, and the nonprofit calls it the “nation’s premier recognition of high achievement and performance among two-year colleges.” This is the first time that the Aspen Institute is opening applications to 200 colleges; in the past, they only allowed 150.

These 200 small and large colleges span rural, urban and suburban areas and provide workforce programs, transfer, bachelor’s degree programs or some combination of the latter two. They were chosen based on data, including retention, completion, transfer and bachelor’s degree attainment rates.

“This recognition places West Valley College on the national stage as a model of excellence and innovation. It reflects our collective commitment to advancing student opportunity, equity and achievement,” said Dr. Jennifer Taylor-Mendoza, president of West Valley College.

The eligible colleges can submit an application for review. “Our job over the coming 20 months is to gather a lot more data and work with a deep bench of field experts to assess which of these 200 stand out so we can not only honor them with a monetary award, but drive attention to the most effective field practices that other colleges can replicate,” Wyner said.
