Here are this week’s top matchups:
Thursday
Menlo-Atherton (3-5, 2-1) at No. 6 Los Gatos (5-3, 3-0), 7:30 p.m.: Los Gatos can lock up at least a share of the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division championship with a home win over M-A. The Wildcats have deployed an explosive offense, with QB Callum Schweitzer frequently finding WR Max Thomas for big gains. The Wildcats have also developed a three-headed running back monster of Grayson Doslak, Hayden Benjamin and Devonte Troutt, with Schweitzer getting involved in the run game as well. After a challenging nonleague slate, M-A has rebounded with improved results in league play. QB Teddy Dacey has a number of skill players to work with, including RBs Monty Turner, Jamarlo Jackson and Evaimalo Ama and WRs Matthew Kwon and Kyle Gabriel. HSRatings.com projects a 44-7 Los Gatos win. – Christian Babcock
Bishop O’Dowd (5-3, 4-0) at James Logan (5-3, 3-1), 7 p.m.: This matchup will likely decide the West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division championship. Logan stumbled against San Leandro last week, but a win over O’Dowd would give the Colts the inside track to the title. To do so, they’ll have to stop Lamar Ellis, the Dragons’ standout transfer running back who has rushed for 180.7 yards per game and averaged 10 yards per carry. The Colts have their own strong runner in sophomore Jeramiyah Cotton, who has gained 337 yards in three games played. HSRatings.com projects a 26-22 win for O’Dowd. – Christian Babcock
Friday
No. 15 Clayton Valley Charter (5-3, 3-0) at No. 4 Acalanes (8-0, 2-0), 7 p.m.: The Diablo Athletic League Foothill Division title will be on the line when these teams meet on Halloween night. Acalanes has soared under first-year coach Joel Isaac, who has taken over from the highly successful Floyd Burnsed and led the Dons to notable victories over Archbishop Mitty, St. Ignatius and Campolindo during an undefeated start. They have gotten it done behind Tyler Winkles (1,797 yards passing, 19 TDs), Josh Eberts (893 rushing yards, 13 TDs) and Finley Rivera (784 receiving yards, 11 TDs). Clayton Valley routed Las Lomas and Miramonte and held off Campolindo during its 3-0 league start. Jhadis Luckey, a transfer from California, has rushed for 1,741 yards and 24 TDs to lead the Ugly Eagles. Last year, Acalanes edged Clayton Valley 28-27. HSRatings.com’s computer projects Acalanes to win Friday 38-27. – Darren Sabedra
No. 10 Monte Vista (5-3, 1-0) at Amador Valley (2-6, 0-2), 7:15 p.m.: What figured to be another game on the schedule has become quite important for Monte Vista, which can win the East Bay Athletic League’s Mountain Division title outright with a win Friday and another next week at rival San Ramon Valley. The Mustangs clinch a tie for the championship with just one more win. They leaped to No. 10 in the latest Bay Area News Group rankings after stunning previously undefeated California 34-13 last week. In that game, Ian Ondricek passed for 207 yards and two touchdowns and Torin Dunphy ran for 173 yards and a TD in 26 carries. Because De La Salle isn’t allowed to win the league – Monte Vista isn’t even playing the Concord powerhouse this season – the race is up for grabs. HSRatings picks Monte Vista 38-21. – Darren Sabedra
Christopher (4-4, 1-2) at Lincoln-San Jose (7-1, 2-1), 7:15 p.m.: If Lincoln wins, it will set up a game between the Lions and Santa Teresa for the Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton title next week. Before that, Lincoln will have to get through Christopher, last year’s Mt. Hamilton champ. The Cougars have had an up-and-down year in their first season under coach Mike Pirnik, who had to replace standout QB Jaxen Robinson. The QB’s younger brother, Dylan Robinson, a sophomore, has stepped in and made strides. Fellow sophomore Adrian Leon has been a security blanket in the backfield, rushing for 767 yards. Lincoln’s offense and defense run directly through Kyan Phillips, who leads the Lions in rushing and receiving and has 1,219 all-purpose yards and 26 touchdowns. HSRatings.com projects a 28-19 Lincoln win. – Christian Babcock
Saturday
No. 8 Archbishop Mitty (5-3, 3-2) at No. 2 Archbishop Riordan (8-0, 5-0), 1:30 p.m.: Riordan has been the West Catholic Athletic League’s top team this season, but its path to the program’s first league championship since 2000 has two more steps: Saturday against Mitty, next Friday at Serra. Mitty has played competitively against the league’s other heavyweights, Serra and St. Francis, and doesn’t figure to be a pushover Saturday. Riordan’s Vanderbilt-bound quarterback Michael Mitchell Jr. will probably have extra motivation as he plays the final regular-season home game of his storied high school career. Mitchell has passed for 2,280 and 32 touchdowns with just three interceptions this fall. Mitty counters with a ground attack led by RB Lazaro Faraj-Washington and a passing game guided by QB Joseph Engin. HSRatings picks Riordan to win 35-14. – Darren Sabedra
