San Jose film screenings: ‘Phantom’ turns 100, ‘Bride’ marks 90th year

Horror is timeless.

To wit, San Jose’s 3Below Theaters are celebrating Halloween weekend with anniversary screenings of two of the genre’s earliest and best, “The Phantom of the Opera,” which is 100 years old, and “The Bride of Frankenstein,” which turned 90 this year.

“Phantom,” with Lon Chaney, made its debut in 1925. That movie is showing at 7 p.m. Halloween and at 2 p,m, Saturday, Nov. 1.

“The Bride of Frankenstein,” starring Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester, came out 90 years ago, in 1935. The showings will be at 8:45 p.m. Halloween and at 3:45 p.m. Saturday.

Between the two flicks, “The Nightmare Before Christmas” will be screened.
