Cal storylines: The Bears take their second stab at winning their sixth game to earn bowl eligibility after a 42-34 double-overtime loss at Virginia Tech. … This is the first of consecutive games the Bears will play vs. Top-25 teams,with a trip to No. 16 Louisville up next week. … Cal has lost 13 straight games to Top-25 opponents, dating to a 21-17 home victory over then-No. 23 Oregon in the COVID-shortened 2020 season. … Freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele has completed 45 of 78 passes with two touchdowns and no turnovers in the past two games. But Cal receivers have as many as 11 drops in those two games, which means his 57.7-percent accuracy could have been 72 percent. … Per Cal’s injury report, the Bears will again be without their Nos. 2 and 3 running backs, LJ Johnson Jr. and Brandon High Jr., and also won’t have starting safety Aiden Manutai or offensive lineman Lamar Robinson.

The Cavaliers are among just three teams without a lost fumble this season. … Cal linebacker Cade Uluave is first nationally among players from Power 4 conferences with 81 tackles after a career-best 19 vs. Virginia Tech. At his current pace of 10.1 tackles per game, Uluave would finish the regular season with 121, which would be fifth-most by a Cal player since 2000. … Cal slot receiver Jacob De Jesus is second in the ACC with 55 receptions.
