REDWOOD CITY — Two unidentified individuals were found deceased after a fire engulfed a liquor store early Monday morning, authorities said.
Around 5:30 a.m. Monday, firefighters responded to Avenue Liquor Store on Roosevelt Avenue, where they found the structure entirely engulfed in flames, according to a news release from the Redwood City Police Department. Responders began work to try to contain the fire.
As fire personnel worked to control the fire, they opened the roof and saw two people inside, authorities said. Both of the people exhibited no life signs and apppeared to have suffered severe burns, officials said.
Police also responded to secure the scene and assist in the response, authorities said.
Officials later confirmed that two people were dead; authorities will seek to confirm their names and notify any next of kin before they are publicly named. Investigators do not know why they were inside the store when the fire began, or whether they were living there.
The owner of the store is cooperating with the investigation, authorities added.
