Pleasant Hill, Foster City plan to open supersize Japanese grocery stores

Pleasant Hill, Foster City plan to open supersize Japanese grocery stores

A gigantic Japanese grocery store complete with a semi-outdoor market hall will open in Pleasant Hill next year, the city officials recently announced.

Osaka Marketplace in Pleasant Hill will take over the 42,000-square-foot space formerly occupied by Orchard Supply Hardware. The expected opening date is November 2026 — about a year after Osaka opens its Foster City location, which is set to debut this month.

“Osaka Marketplace will bring the flavors of Japan to Pleasant Hill,” general manager Kazuhiro Takeda said in a press release put out by the city. The release stated, “The grocery store will offer an extensive selection of authentic Japanese groceries, fresh produce, seafood, ready-to-eat meals and hard-to-find imported foods and goods – all under one roof.”

Osaka Marketplace originally opened in Fremont in 2021 and is known for its grab-and-go sushi deals and indoor foot court.

The food court in Pleasant Hill will be partially outdoor, as the supermarket plans to reuse the former hardware store’s garden center as a semi-outdoor market hall with several “mini restaurants,” featuring sushi, ramen, chicken karaage and bento boxes.

The new marketplace will join a handful of new destinations in downtown Pleasant Hill, including Cantina Jack’s, Paris Baguette, Crumbs, The Royale, Morgan Territory Brewing and the Batter N’ Icing cupcakery.

“Osaka Marketplace shows the City’s commitment to prioritizing the attraction of businesses that are local,” mayor Sue Noack said in a statement.

It’ll be Osaka’s third location, following the opening of the Foster City store set for this month.

Foster City mayor Stacy Jimenez said in a July statement that the town was expecting a November 2025 opening. Osaka will open in a former Lucky’s location, offering its combination of Japanese groceries, fresh produce and specialty sushi. The company recently posted on its Instagram that it’s already started hiring employees for the new spot.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Osaka Marketplace to Foster City,” Jimenez said in a July statement. “Their arrival brings new energy to Edgewater Place Shopping Center and offers a fresh, high-quality shopping experience that our residents will truly enjoy.”
