SANTA CLARA – No savior is rushing onto the 49ers’ practice field this week in the wake of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline.
Unless it’s Bryce Huff returning from his hamstring strain. Or fellow defensive lineman Keion White, who arrived a week ahead of the trade deadline.
The 49ers played possum Tuesday. They did not buy into the New York Jets’ Tuesday fire sale or pony up for any other household names to fill holes in this injury-ravaged yet playoff-bound roster.
Here are 10 thoughts about the deadline:
1. The 49ers did make a trade … last week for White, and back in August for running back Brian Robinson and wide receiver Skyy Moore, and five months ago for Huff.
2. None of those four trades cost more than a Day 3 draft pick but that combination ate into general manager John Lynch’s stash.
3. The 49ers still own their first-, second- and third-round choices to complement this year’s youth movement.
4. While Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams recover from ACL tears, the 49ers forge ahead with these defensive ends: Huff, White, Sam Okuayinonu, Robert Beal Jr., Clelin Ferrell and William Bradley-King, the latter two of whom are on the practice squad.
5. The 49ers avoided adding injury-risk veterans in March’s free agency, and they stayed true to that this week. The Jets’ Jermaine Johnson (2024 Achilles) and the Dolphins’ Bradley Chubb (2019 & ’23 ACL) stayed put.
6. Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson may have been tempting and worth the costly investment, both in trade compensation and future salary ($30 million this year, possible franchise tag next year). He has been dealing with a hip injury the past month.
7. Jaelan Phillips is arguably the best defensive end to move teams, going from the Dolphins to the defending Super Bowl-champion Eagles. He cost a third-rounder. He was in on the sack that broke Jimmy Garoppolo’s foot in 2022 and launched Brock Purdy’s career.

8. Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams was highly coveted by the 49ers before they took Nick Bosa at No. 2 in 2019. Williams went No. 3 to the Jets, and Tuesday he went to the overpaying Cowboys for a 2026 second-round, 2027 first-rounder and defensive tackle Mazi Smith.
9. The Jets’ other major move shipped cornerback Sauce Gardner to the AFC-leading Colts, who paid up in free agency for ex-49ers starter Charvarius Ward. However, Ward has missed the past four games with a concussion and is on injured reserve at least two more games.
10. Gardner cost the Colts two first-rounders and wide receiver AD Mitchell. It’s the high-priced move a team makes when eyeing a run to Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium, like the Eagles also have done in their bid to repeat. Two other AFC contenders to watch: the Los Angeles Chargers grabbed Saints offensive tackle Trevor Penning, and the Jacksonville Jaguars sprung Jakobi Meyers from the Raiders.
