SAN RAMON — Bishop Ranch in San Ramon is enjoying a rebound in the pace of workers employed in the mixed-use neighborhood, a return that tops past efforts in the South Bay and San Francisco.

An estimated 60% of the workforce physically located at Bishop Ranch has returned to the campus, officials with the East Bay employment, housing, retail, restaurant, entertainment, and lodging hub said.

“Bishop Ranch is proving that a thriving workplace can drive economic vitality across an entire community,” said Alex Mehran Jr., president of Sunset Development, the developer and principal owner of Bishop Ranch.

By comparison to Bishop Ranch’s 60% pace, the return-to-office rate was 49% for Silicon Valley and 41.8% for San Francisco, according to figures produced by Kastle Access Control System. The most recently surveyed month comparing the three regions was August, Sunset Development officials stated.

Workers also appear to be staying longer once they arrive at their offices at Bishop Ranch, according to Sunset Development.

Average office dwell times have reached 96% of pre-pandemic levels. Workers are averaging daily stays that range from 5.4 to 6.3 hours.

Some office neighborhoods at Bishop Ranch exceed pre-COVID-19 levels in terms of how long workers are staying in the office once they arrive.

With plans for 8,000 homes at Bishop Ranch in active planning or under construction, Sunset Development officials hope to heighten the trend toward more in-person office work and increased office stays.

“Walking to work has increased 11.8% since 2019,” Sunset Development stated. “Short commutes of less than 10 minutes have grown 28.2%.”

Compared to a year ago, the number of employees working at Bishop Ranch has increased 13%, statistics from Placer.ai show, according to Sunset Development.

“The strength of our return-to-office numbers reflects a dynamic environment where businesses, employees and residents all benefit,” Mehran Jr. said.
