Uncork past, celebrate present at Santa Cruz Mountains Grand Tasting

Uncork past, celebrate present at Santa Cruz Mountains Grand Tasting

There are few ways to get a better snapshot of the state of winemaking in the Santa Cruz Mountains than to attend the Grand Tasting at The Mountain Winery, where nearly 40 wineries will be pouring their wines on Sunday, March 30, 1-4 p.m.

A seminar prior to main event will focus on the rich heritage of the Santa Cruz Mountains wine region. Attendees will learn how vines imported to the eastern portion of the region from the storied estates of Louis Latour in Burgundy and Château Margaux in Bordeaux by Paul Masson and Emmett Rixford in the 1800s gave root to vineyards still producing to this day.

Titled “Experience the Santa Cruz Mountains: Uncork the past, celebrate the present,” the seminar is set for 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in winery’s Overlook Room.

Moderator Ted Glennon will field a panel of winemakers and winegrowers from Cooper-Garrod (Bill Cooper), La Questa, Mount Eden (Reid Patterson), The Mountain Winery (Prudy Foxx), Ridge (David Gates) and Sante Arcangeli (John Benedetti). Attendees will taste six library wines, including pinot noir from Mount Eden, Sante Arcangeli and The Mountain Winery and cabernet sauvignons from Cooper Garrod, La Questa and Ridge. Most will be older vintages, punctuating the age-worthiness of this special mountain terroir.

A library wine tasting experience, led by winemakers and sommeliers, will feature library wines from Ridge Vineyards, Kathryn Kennedy, Mount Eden Vineyards, Kings Mountain Vineyard, House Family Vineyards, Cooper-Garrod Estate Vineyards, Thomas Fogarty Winery, Big Basin Vineyards, Muns Vineyard and more.

During the Grand Tasting, guests can bid on more than 50 exciting silent auction items, including rare wine releases, large format bottles and VIP vineyard tours.

Food is available for sale, or attendees can bring their own picnics.

Tickets for the seminar are $60 at https://bit.ly/4iPTvvA; Grand Tasting tickets are $79. VIP tickets are $120 and include early entry, a rosé bar and a grazing table prepared by Ross Hansen of Oak & Rye.
