San Jose: Driver dies after own vehicle rolls over her, police say

SAN JOSE — A woman died last week when her minivan rolled over her after she parked on an incline in a residential neighborhood, according to San Jose police.

Police officers were called around 10:50 a.m. Friday for a report of a car accident near Lyric Lane and Otono Court, north of Branham Lane East. They arrived to find a woman gravely injured, and she was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

An investigation determined that the injuries occurred after the victim had parked a red 2006 Kia Sedona on an incline on the northbound side of Lyric Lane.

“As the driver exited the vehicle, the vehicle started moving backwards, knocking down the victim and rolling over her,” police said in a Monday news release.

The driver has been identified by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office as Bella Vierra, 78, of San Jose.

Additional details were not released. The collision marked the city’s eighth traffic death of the year.

Anyone with information for traffic investigators can contact Detective Ryan Leslie at 408-277-4654 or by email at [email protected].
