Warriors’ Steph Curry recognized as NBA’s best teammate

SAN FRANCISCO – Steph Curry is, officially, the best teammate in the NBA.

The Warriors’ superstar was named the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year on Monday morning, becoming the first Golden State player to earn the honor since the award’s inception in 2013.

The Twyman-Stokes award is given to a player deemed ‘the best teammate based on selfless play, on- and off-court leadership as a mentor and role model to other NBA players, and commitment and dedication to team,’ according to a press release sent out by the team. Curry was one of 12 candidates for the award.

The award is named in honor of Maurice Stokes and Jack Twyman, who were teammates on the Rochester Royals in the 1950s. When Stokes became paralyzed in 1958 following a seizure, Twyman became his legal guardian and helped care for the forward until Stokes’ death in 1970.

This is not the first time Curry has been recognized for being a great teammate.

During his second season, Curry won the NBA Sportsmanship Award in 2011, an honor bestowed to “a player that best represents the ideals of sportsmanship on the court.”

Curry, 37, averaged 24.5 points per game this season in 70 starts, being named to his 11th All-Star team and is highly likely to be named to his 11th All-NBA squad. His Warriors are currently up 2-1 in their first-round series with the Rockets.
