Gunfire flew last month in area near three schools in Concord

CONCORD — Contra Costa County prosecutors have charged a man with two counts of assault with a semi-automatic handgun and shooting into a school zone after gunfire near three schools last month wounded a person, according to authorities and court records.

The shooting happened on March 18 in the area of Esperanza and Huron drives, according to a statement from Concord police. That location is near Sun Terrace Elementary School, the Holbrook Language Academy and the Rocketship Futuro Academy. Pixieland, an amusement park designed for small children, also is in the area.

“Violence in school zones is simply unacceptable,” Concord police said in their statement, adding they would “dedicate all available resources to investigating and solving these crimes.”

Police said they were notified by medics at John Muir Medical Center in Concord that medics had treated a shooting victim. That person survived and was released.

Police said it did not take long to identify the shooter, and they obtained an arrest warrant for him. The U.S. Marshals Service provided aid in the investigation, and authorities later located the man in Richmond.

Officers arrested him there. They did not say immediately when the arrest happened.

Investigators using the search warrant found a loaded gun when they arrested the man and later determined that the shooting had been a targeted attack, police said.

Court records state that the man also is charged with shooting a gun at an occupied motor vehicle and possession of a gun by a convicted felon. He’s being held in custody at the Martinez Detention Facility in lieu of $1.521 million bail, according to jail records.

The investigation is ongoing. Those with information can contact Det. Dylan Luciano at 925-603-5831.
