The 49ers added offensive tackle D.J. Humphries to the roster Tuesday, addressing a position that went unfilled both in the draft as well in signing undrafted free agents.
Humphries’ addition was posted on the social media platform X by the agency AMDG Sports and confirmed by a league source.
Humphries, 6-foot-5, 307 pounds, has played in 100 games with 100 starts since being drafted in the first round by Arizona in 2016 out of Florida. He made the Pro Bowl in 2021 and was well regarded enough to receive a three-year $45 million contract extension in 2020 and a three-year, $66 million extension in 2022.
Injuries derailed Humphries with Arizona, with a back injury in 2022 and then a torn ACL late in the 2023 season. Due a salary cap number of $22.9 million, the Cardinals released Humphries because he wouldn’t be ready to start the 2024 season.
Humphries signed with the Kansas City Chiefs and played just two games in 2024 because of a hamstring injury.
Primarily a left tackle, Humphries played right tackle as a rookie and could be in play as the 49ers’ swing tackle behind left tackle Trent Williams and right tackle Colton McKivitz. That role was previously filled by Jaylon Moore, who signed a two-year, $30 million free agent deal with the Chiefs.

Coach Kyle Shanahan wasn’t willing to divulge who the 49ers’ swing tackle would be in his post-draft press conference Saturday, with the top candidates at the time being Austen Pleasants and Spencer Burford. Burford has primarily played at guard, while Pleasants played 67 snaps in three games, splitting time with Charlie Heck after both Williams and Moore were declared out for the season with injuries.
“There are usually other options too all the way up until the season, and there are options after cuts at the end of training camp,” Shanahan said. “We’ll see what our opening day roster is, but we’ve got a lot of competition there. And it’s definitely not solidified yet.”
