SF Giants recall Kyle Harrison, designate veteran reliever for assignment

SF Giants recall Kyle Harrison, designate veteran reliever for assignment

Kyle Harrison is coming back to the Giants’ major-league club as they embark on a six-game Midwestern trip.

The Giants recalled Harrison after Sunday’s 9-3 win over the Rockies, designating Lou Trivino for assignment after he pitched a scoreless ninth.

Harrison was the favorite to earn the Giants’ fifth rotation spot in spring training, but lost out to Landen Roupp. His fastball velocity was down after losing weight due to an illness before camp, and hitters took advantage.

Now, Harrison’s fastball is back to reaching 97 miles per hour at its fastest, and his control appears to be better, too. The 23-year-old former De La Salle star has 38 strikeouts and just eight walks over 26 innings (six starts) at Triple-A Sacramento this season.

His outing on Wednesday for the River Cats may have sealed his return: He struck out seven Reno batters and walked none, allowing one run in five innings.

Giants general manager Zach Minasian said on KNBR Thursday morning that he welcomed pressure from Harrison to return to the big leagues, where he spent all of last season.

Roupp’s next time in the rotation would be Monday at Wrigley Field. He is 4-2 but has given up nine runs (seven earned) and walked six batters in eight innings over his last two starts, including a loss Wednesday in San Diego.

Sunday notwithstanding, Trivino has struggled in his first season with the Giants. He has allowed eight runs — all earned — in 12 1/3 innings, his first action in the majors since 2022 as he underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2023.

He pitched parts of five seasons for the A’s before being traded to the Yankees in 2022.
