No information was immediately released about the driver who was killed. No other injuries were reported.

Authorities said that around 3:45 a.m. a vehicle eastbound on Highway 4 near Bailey Road went across all traffic lanes, left the freeway and crashed through barriers before stopping on the BART tracks about 100 feet south of the Bay Point station.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

At 7:43 a.m., BART said train service had resumed, with delays, between Antioch and the North Concord/ Martinez station.

Electrical power to the tracks was shut down so that the crash could be investigated and measures taken to remove the vehicle. There was significant damage to BART’s third rail and track infrastructure, which will need repairs once the vehicle is removed.

Because of the crash, BART started its morning service with no trains running from Antioch to North Concord. It worked with other transit agencies to get more bus service to connect East Contra Costa riders to the North Concord Station before the service resumed.

The California Highway Patrol was leading the vehicle investigation and BART crews were on standby to perform track work, officials said.
