Bay FC loses heartbreaker as teenager scores in stoppage time for San Diego

Bay FC allowed a goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time as Trinity Armstrong headed a corner kick from Kenza Dali into the ground before it bounced into the net to lift San Diego Wave FC to a 2-1 win at Snapdragon Stadium on Sunday night.

It was the first career NWSL goal for the 17-year-old Armstrong, who met Dali’s outswinging corner just in front of the net and headed it down, causing it to bounce over Bay FC’s defenders and past goalie Jordan Silkowitz.

Karlie Lema scored the only goal for Bay FC, as she took a pass from Racheal Kundananji and right-footed a shot to the left corner past goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan to tie the game 1-1 at the 18th minute. That came 12 minutes after San Diego’s Kennedy Wesley scored on a header that got past a diving Silkowitz for her first goal of the season.

“Any game in the NWSL is really tough. Proud of the group for responding to going down a goal early, I think we were resilient in that,” Bay FC defender Abby Dahlkemper said. “Not hanging our heads, but the little things make a big difference in this league. We’re taking the positives, focusing on the little things that can help us improve and looking forward to another game next weekend.”

Silkowitz finished with three saves, including one on a penalty shot by María Sánchez in the 27th minute. San Diego also hit the post three times, including one by Delphine Cascarino in the 88th minute.

Bay FC (2-3-2) travels to play the Kansas City Current next Sunday. Its next home game is on May 17 against Angel City FC.
