Vote now: Bay Area News Group boys athlete of the week

Editor’s note: We prohibit the use of bots and any other artificial methods of voting. Suspicious activity could lead to the disqualification of candidates and a permanent suspension of the Athlete of the Week poll. No voting by email: Votes by email and after 5 p.m. Wednesday are not counted.

Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) boys Athlete of the Week poll.

For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.

This week, we consider performances from April 28-May 3.

Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Vote as many times as you’d like until then without using bots or any other artificial methods of voting.

Votes by email and after 5 p.m. Wednesday are not counted.

Winners are announced each Friday online and in the print edition of the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections.

Candidates for future Athlete of the Week polls can be nominated at [email protected].

We accept nominations until 11 a.m. each Monday.

We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps by coaches/team statisticians.

On to the nominees:

Hayden Burton, Oakland Tech baseball: The senior hit a walk-off single to lead Oakland Tech to a 6-5 win over Skyline. The Bulldogs won the Oakland Athletic League regular-season championship with the victory. 

Kai Chung, Menlo swimming: The sophomore won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 butterfly at the West Bay Athletic League championships.

DJ Delaney, St. Ignatius baseball: Delaney hit a walk-off single to lead St. Ignatius to a 2-1 win over Valley Christian. St. Ignatius (14-8-2) is scheduled to play St. Francis on Tuesday. 

Chayce Formosa, Liberty baseball: Formosa struck out 10 in a complete-game performance to lead Liberty to a 4-1 win over Pittsburg. Liberty (13-6, 6-0) sits atop the Bay Valley Athletic League standings. 

Luis He, Mission San Jose track and field: The junior took first place in the 400-meter race at the It’s Always Sunny in Union City meet with a time of 51.41. 

Bennett Nishikawa, Live Oak lacrosse: Nishikawa scored four goals and had an assist in Live Oak’s 18-4 win over Carmel. Live Oak is 11-4 this season. 

Luke Ornelas, Terra Nova baseball: Ornelas, a senior, went 3 for 3 and knocked in a run in Terra Nova’s 3-2 win over Aragon. Terra Nova is 15-5-1 this season. 

Austin Price, Silver Creek track and field: The senior won the high jump at the Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa Division finals, jumping 5-8.

Jack Richardson, Northgate lacrosse: The senior scored 10 goals in wins against Miramonte and College Park. Northgate will play San Marin in its regular-season finale on Tuesday. 

Owen Seidel, Castro Valley baseball: Seidel struck out nine and allowed one hit to lead Castro Valley to a 2-0 win over Encinal. Castro Valley (17-5, 7-1) can win the West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division regular-season title by splitting its final series against Alameda this week. 

Alex Tran, Piedmont Hills baseball: The senior went 3 for 3, knocked in two runs and scored twice in Piedmont Hills’ 8-7 comeback win over Sobrato. Piedmont Hills (14-8) has won its last six games.
