The fire broke out around 3:20 p.m. at a two-story home near the intersection of 98th Avenue and Lawlor Street, Oakland fire Battalion Chief Anthony Sanders said in an interview.

Sanders said crews from a fire station across the street arrived at the scene seconds later.

“We ended up going to two alarms due to the amount of fire that was coming up through the roof on arrival,” he said.

The fire was quickly knocked down.

“Crews did a great job putting a stop on this fire and keeping it from extending to other houses,” Sanders said.

One firefighter suffered minor burns to his shoulder, Sanders said. He was treated at the scene.

There was a report of a second burn victim, but crews did not find anyone else with injuries at the scene, Sanders said. He noted that electricity and gas were previously turned off to the home.

“It’s obviously a hoarder/unhoused-living-type scenario,” Sanders said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
