Credit union buys long-empty San Jose site of popular restaurant

SAN JOSE — A credit union has bought a long-shuttered restaurant site in San Jose, paying millions for the property that includes the former dining establishment building and the adjacent parking lot.

Meriwest Credit Union has paid about $9.6 million to buy a one-time restaurant property at 620 Blossom Hill Road in south San Jose, according to documents filed on May 5 with the Santa Clara County Recorder’s office.

The just-bought site was the long-time location of a Marie Callender’s pie restaurant, which closed its doors in 2022 after decades of operations.

The property is part of the Sunrise Plaza shopping center, which is near the interchange of State Route 85 and Blossom Hill Road in San Jose.

A family-held real estate firm headed up by San Jose residents Elias Tsigaris, Louis Tsigaris and Gus Tsigaris sold the site to Meriwest Credit Union, county and state public records show.

San Jose-based Meriwest Credit Union bought the site in an all-cash trasnaction, according to the county records.

The financial institution’s roots go back to 1961 with the formation of the IBM San Jose Employees Federal Credit Union. In 1975 the finance organization’s name was changed to Pacific IBM Employees Federal Credit Union. In 1999 Pacific IBM became Meriwest Credit Union.
