The REAL ID deadline is one week away. Here’s what TSA wants you to know

Those that will have special hours from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, are:

San Jose, 111 W. Alma St.
Oakland, 5300 Claremont Ave.
Concord, 2070 Diamond Blvd.

And until June 27, these offices will add an extra hour, from 7 to 8 a.m., on every weekday except Wednesday:

Pleasanton, 6300 W. Las Positas Blvd.
Fremont, 4287 Central Ave.

The extended hours, whether on Saturday or on weekday mornings, are designated for REAL ID applications only and they require an appointment.

DMV offices’ regular hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. all other weekdays.

On Wednesday, May 7, a nationwide rule took effect under which a standard driver’s license is no longer accepted at security checkpoints for domestic flights. Travelers can use a REAL ID license, a REAL ID official identification, a U.S. passport or one of several other accepted alternatives. REAL ID licenses are indicated by a star in the upper right corner — on California’s version, the star is on a silhouette of a bear.

The federal Department of Homeland Security said that in the early days of the rollout most travelers with non-compliant ID would be allowed on their flight after extra screening.

License holders who don’t need a REAL ID for an upcoming flight are encouraged to wait until their renewal to go through the certification, the California DMV said.

An applicant should start the process online at the DMV’s website, then bring their identity and proof-of-address documents to a DMV office to complete it. If the online application is done, the office portion should take only about 15 minutes, the DMV said.

For those intending to go to a DMV office for a task other than getting REAL ID, the agency recommends checking to see if it can be completed online.

The DMV said that as of May 1, about 58% of all California-issued driver’s licenses and IDs had been certified for REAL ID. That figure was similar to Homeland Security’s estimate for nationwide compliance.
