Mountain View: Chemicals ignite $1 million apartment complex fire

A fire at a Mountain View apartment complex caused an estimated $1 million in damage Saturday afternoon when improperly stored chemicals ignited on a balcony, according to the Mountain View Fire Department.

The fire displaced seven adults from the multi-family apartment complex in the 700 block of South Oak Street. One bystander was evaluated for injuries by Santa Clara County paramedics but declined transportation to a hospital, the fire department wrote in a social media post.

The fire started about 1:24 p.m. Firefighters arrived at 1:29 p.m. to find flames consuming two apartments on the second floor. Crews launched a water hose attack at the fire and prevented it from spreading to other apartments.

The California Professional Firefighters Union provided the seven adult victims with $250 gift cards from its Supply Aid to Victims of Emergency Program. The American Red Cross was called to support residents in need of temporary housing.
