Amazon strikes deal with WeWork for big South Bay office building

SANTA CLARA — Amazon has struck a deal with WeWork that will allow the online commerce giant to secure space in a big Santa Clara office building in a sign some tech companies still seek to expand in the region.

The tech titan will occupy 141,000 square feet at 4980 Great America Parkway in Santa Clara, according to several sources with knowledge of the transaction.

Amazon’s agreement in Santa Clara extends an expansion by the tech company in Silicon Valley.

WeWork secured the Santa Clara space in what’s considered a prime office campus. The Sobrato Organization, one of the Bay Area’s most successful real estate firms, developed and owns the campus.

Amazon landed the space through a licensing agreement with WeWork, which leased the building from the Sobrato firm.

“We’re pleased to continue supporting Amazon’s real estate strategy through our bespoke enterprise solutions, designed to help corporate occupiers expand their footprints efficiently, flexibly and at scale,” a WeWork spokesperson said.

WeWork’s enterprise solutions offer larger companies an array of options, including headquarters sites, full-floor occupancies and private offices, according to the coworking company.

It wasn’t immediately clear when Amazon might move into the new offices that it licensed from WeWork.

The campus where Amazon has obtained office space totals 450,000 square feet, according to sources.

In December, Amazon struck a deal to rent a big office building in Mountain View, also through an agreement with WeWork.

The two Amazon rental agreements offered fresh evidence that the ice-cold office market was beginning to thaw in the South Bay.

Amazon obtained 217,000 square feet of office space through a license agreement provided by WeWork for offices at 401 San Antonio Road in Mountain View. At various times, Facebook and LinkedIn had taken space in the building through rental agreements.
