BART fully restores service days after fire-sparked system disruption

SAN JOSE — BART has restored full service to the fire-hobbled mass transit network by reactivating the San Jose-Daly City line, days after a blaze triggered widespread disruptions that stranded Bay Area commuters.

The Bay Area transit agency restored service on Monday to the BART Green Line, which connects the Berryessa Station in San Jose and the Daly City Station in San Mateo County.

BART service was impacted in wide sections of the East Bay and South Bay on May 20 after a fire broke out near the transit agency’s San Leandro station.

Service to all 50 BART stations was restored on May 21, a day after the fire broke out.

However, service on the Green Line that directly links San Jose Berryessa with Daly City was knocked out until Monday, even though other lines were operating.

Green Line service had been knocked out due to fire damage to the tracks needed for that specific line.

The fire was related to a power problem, according to BART.

For the Memorial Day holiday, BART was operating on a Sunday schedule.

The May 20 disruptions marked the second major breakdown for BART service during May.

On May 9, a massive computer outage interrupted service to all 50 stations for several hours. That problem was due to a network connectivity issue.

As a result, network operations staff weren’t able to see track circuits and couldn’t poinpoint the locations of trains, which produced unsafe operating conditions.
