NorCal golf: De La Salle wins team title, College Prep’s Chang places first

Will Chang of College Prep in Oakland captured the Northern California individual golf championship and De La Salle won the team title on Tuesday at Berkeley Country Club in El Cerrito.

Chang and De La Salle’s Josh Kim each finished their round at minus-4 68, but Chang won a playoff to claim medalist honors.

Kim, meanwhile, celebrated a team championship as the Concord powerhouse finished with team a score of plus-six 366 to beat runner-up Stevenson by two strokes and third-place Palo Alto by four.

Chang’s round included four birdies on the front nine and two on the back.

Kim had an eagle on the par-5 16th and four birdies.

The top three teams and nine individuals who were not on a qualifying team advance to state championships on June 3 at Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach.

Serra’s Kyler Heath, St. Ignatius’ Ben Thomson and Jayden Jew and Dougherty Valley’s Nakul Shrivastava were among the individuals to advance.

Not all players choose to move on.

Chang was not listed as one of the players to advance, although he clearly qualified.

De La Salle’s team title comes a week after the Spartans won their fifth consecutive NCS team championship.
