The sentence follows Ricardo Garcia Perez’s conviction in April, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force launched an investigation in December after discovering Perez was distributing child sexual abuse material online, according to prosecutors.

Perez tried to destroy evidence when officers served a search warrant at his home in January, the district attorney’s office said.

Prosecutors reviewed the evidence collected by investigators and charged Perez with a four-count felony complaint. Two counts were for aggravated possession of child sexual abuse material and two counts centered on the possession of child sexual abuse material.

In addition to the prison term, Perez must register as a sex offender, according to prosecutors.

The district attorney’s office said Perez has been in custody since his arrest and will begin serving his sentence immediately.
