The festival is a traditional Chinese holiday that takes place on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. Dragon boats were initially used for religious reasons, but the holiday became associated the death of a patriotic poet who drowned himself during the Warring States period. Dragon boat racing was said to begin after villagers agitated the water and paddled to try to save him or prevent his body from being eaten by fish, according to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art.

The event will feature music, dance, storytelling and food. It will take place from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in West Valley College’s  parking lot 2.

Yoga in the park

Los Gatos-Saratoga Community Education and Recreation is hosting weekly yoga sessions until September.

Participants of all levels are invited to Wildwood Park to breathe, stretch and flow in nature. A different instructor will be leading the practice each week, allowing students to practice a new style each session.

The event takes place Thursdays, 10-11 a.m., May 29-Sept. 25.
