Bay Area board gamers meet at Palo Alto library

Board Games Day

The Downtown Palo Alto Library is hosting the Bay Area Boardgames Meetup Group on Feb. 1, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., for a full day of modern board gaming.

Attendees can bring their own games to play or jump in with others. Bringing snacks and drinks is recommended to fuel an afternoon of marathon gaming in the El Camino Room. Masks are not required, but are recommended.

The gaming group meets on the first Saturday of the month. For more information, visit https://paloalto.bibliocommons.com/events.

‘Battalion Artist’ at Hoover

“The Battalion Artist: A Sailor’s Journey Through the South Seas,” an exhibit at Hoover Tower at Stanford University, is designed as a journey through the Pacific theater of World War II.

The exhibit traces the wartime experiences of Natale Bellantoni, a gifted artist and member of the US Navy “Seabees”—the construction battalions that were formed after the attack on Pearl Harbor and played a vital role in America’s victory in the Pacific. It spotlights Bellantoni’s papers, which contain watercolor paintings, sketchbooks, photographs, letters and other wartime ephemera, along with posters and other materials from Hoover’s World War II collections.

Bellantoni traveled extensively throughout the South Pacific as a member of the 78th Seabee battalion; his personal documentation of the war provides insights into the young American soldiers who served in World War II.

The exhibit runs through Sunday, Aug. 10, at the Lou Henry Hoover Gallery, in Hoover Tower at Stanford University. For more information, visit https://www.hoover.org/events/battalion-artist.
