Livermore child sexual misconduct suspect dies awaiting trial

DUBLIN — A 78-year-old man facing trial next month on charges of sexual misconduct with young girls over multiple years in Livermore died Thursday at a hospital after becoming ill at Santa Rita Jail, authorities said.

Daniel Lavi, of Livermore, had been in custody at Santa Rita since November 2019 and had an extensive medical history that included several chronic and serious illnesses, the sheriff’s office said.

About 8:25 p.m. Tuesday, his heath began to decline rapidly and he was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment, the sheriff’s office said. He was pronounced deceased by a doctor at the hospital at 12:24 a.m. Thursday, the sheriff’s office said.

His family had been notified of his critical condition and was able to visit him at the hospital before he died, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the death and notified the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office and California Attorney General’s Office as part of protocol in such cases.

According to court documents, Lavi had pleaded not guilty and was facing trial July 21 on multiple counts of lewd act upon a child, annoying or molesting a minor, continuous sexual abuse and possession of child pornography.

The alleged crimes happened to multiple victims — some under the age of 18, and some younger than 14 — between January 2013 and December 2016 and August 2019 through October 2019, the documents say. He had been held without bail.
