SAN LEANDRO — A man walking his dog Saturday morning was fatally shot, becoming the city’s first homicide victim of the year, police said.
The name of the man, who police said appeared to be in his 40s, was not released pending confirmation of his identity and notification of his next of kin.
The man was found shot in the back about 8:23 a.m. Saturday in the area of Euclid Avenue and East 14th Street, a mostly commercial area in the Broadmoor District. He was lying on his back with his dog, an Akita, still leashed to his hand, police said. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police said the man lived in a neighborhood near the shooting site.
The victim’s dog did not appear to be injured and was taken to a temporary shelter, police said.
Police said in a news release Monday that even though there was no information yet regarding a possible motive, investigators do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the community.
The fatal shooting is the city’s first homicide of the year. Last year the city recorded four homicides, all of which were cleared with arrests, police said.
