It all happened Sunday morning, after an officer spotted the vehicle driving in the area of Gamay Drive and Empire Avenue about 9:15 a.m., according to a statement from the City of Oakley. The officer followed the car when it turned north on Teakwood Drive; authorities said the officer learned the driver was a parolee who had violated the terms of his parole.

Authorities said the officer tried to stop the car but that the 44-year-old Brentwood resident who was driving it accelerated.

As he sped away, the man tried to turn onto eastbound Main Street but collided with a Ram 1500 truck that was headed west, authorities said.

Both of the drivers were hospitalized, authorities said. They both were expected to be OK. The suspect remained in the hospital early Tuesday and was not listed in custody in any of the Contra Costa County jails.
