Suspect sought in Emeryville arson fires

EMERYVILLE — A man who police said deliberately set three vehicles on fire Saturday morning and unsuccessfully tried to set another vehicle and a pizza restaurant ablaze is being sought.

Police on Wednesday released video images of the suspect in hopes of getting him identified.

Emeryville police are asking the public to be on the lookout for this man, a suspect in the arson fires of three vehicles on June 28 in the rear alley of a package store at 3889 San Pablo Ave.

The suspect first struck about 7:14 a.m. Saturday  when he set three vehicles on fire in the rear alley of Pak N Save, 3889 San Pablo Ave. They were a Toyota Avalon, Jeep Wrangler and Honda Fit, police said. A damage figure was not available.

The fires were quickly extinguished by Alameda County firefighters and no injuries were reported.

Emeryville Officer Baylee Worthen said video surveillance in the area showed the man intentionally setting the fires.

The video also showed the man unsuccessfully trying to set a fourth vehicle on fire,  a Toyota Camry parked near the other vehicles.

Police said the man then went to Lanesplitter Pizza & Pub, 3645 San Pablo Ave.,  where he lit some plywood in front of the building  on fire. The debris began to burn, spreading flames onto the building before it was extinguished.

A motive for the arsons has not been determined. Authorities did not release a complete description of the suspect.

Anyone who recognizes the suspect or has any information about the fires is asked to call investigators at 510-596-3700. If anyone sees the suspect they are urged not to approach him but to call 911 immediately.
